When I first embarked on a search for good egg tarts in Hong Kong, recommendations often pointed to Tai Cheong Bakery. I tried them, but was disappointed as their egg tarts had shortbread pastry and the egg custard part was too sweet - not the type I like at all.
My search continued, and I finally found the perfect egg tarts at Honolulu Coffee Shop.
For a cha chan teng that was not part of a large chain (like Tsui Wah or Tai Hing), Honolulu surprised me by having rather a large café space. I was actually expecting to be squeezed into a tiny, cramped area, like what I encounter at most other cha chan tengs. Instead, Honolulu operated on such a large scale that they even offered free wifi to their customers.
Look at these egg tarts calling out to me from the shopfront!
Now these are the kind of egg tarts I love - flaky crust that crumble and melt in your mouth, and egg custard that is smooth and tasty, not too bland nor sweet.
Honolulu in Central sits on the same street as Yat Lok, so it's really convenient to pop by for a little snack after enjoying a roast meat lunch. That is, if you still have the stomach space for it!
