Sai Kung - Seafood and dessert

Although seafood is served at most proper Chinese restaurants in Hong Kong, there are also 3 popular areas to eat it - Lamma Island, Lei Yue Mun and Sai Kung. I'd already been to Lamma Island a couple of times, and decided to check out Sai Kung this time round.

Directions:
  • Take the MTR to Choi Hong station, and exit from C2.
  • Upon reaching street level, look for the minibus stop about 50m away.
  • Take green minibus 1A to Sai Kung Minibus Station. The journey is about 25 minutes.
Upon reaching Sai Kung Promenade, I found the place bustling with activity. People were promoting the sale of fresh seafood on their little boats, and customers were leaning over railings haggling for the best price. It was quite a unique experience that was nice to watch.

After taking our own sweet time to walk up and down the promenade, we headed to the Seafood Street for dinner. This was a street further that was lined with seafood restaurants. Some people would generally caution against these waterfront seafood restaurants, as they tend to overcharge tourists especially. Do check the prices before you order anything.

Our restaurant of choice was Chuen Kee, as from online reviews, it seemed to be quite a popular choice. It can get very expensive choosing your own seafood since you are charged by the weight of the seafood, so we didn't.

We opted for a 3-person set meal, which comprised 6 dishes. Together with some drinks that we ordered, the meal cost us HK$617.

Being a fan of cheese, I enjoyed this dish - lobster with cheese and noodles.

Steamed prawns.

Fried squid with pepper and salt.

How did the seafood experience in Sai Kung compare to the one I had in Lamma Island? Food quality wise, I would say that they were pretty on par. Price wise, perhaps because we ordered a set here, it actually cost us less than at Lamma Island. Food aside, both Lamma Island and Sai Kung offered different atmosphere and I enjoyed strolling along both areas to soak it all in. My next stop for seafood would be Lei Yue Mun.

Anyway, while you're in Sai Kung, do check out Honeymoon Dessert for sweet treats after your meal. This popular dessert chain store now has several branches all over Hong Kong, but the Sai Kung branch was where they first started out in 1995.
